Here’s a mural illustration for my Illustration Seminar class based off of the Red Lion Pub in Milwaukee, WI.
I got some fish and chips when I visited the pub to get a feel for the atmosphere, and gather references. They were one of the best fish and chips I’ve had, and I really enjoyed visiting.
I wanted to capture the fun atmosphere of the Red Lion Pub in my illustration. I drew the lion and unicorn meeting a fish king. They are introducing him to the idea of fish and chips and the pub. In the sky are flying bangers and mash. On the cliffs is a shepherd and his flock of shepherd’s pie. I utilized a limited color palette to match the British flag and trim of the pub. I took inspiration from Edward Bawden’s chunky linework and utilized hatching to get a British feel to the illustration.
